Just recently I have seen a lot of people talking about these boxes. I wondered what they were and if I would benefit from having one, so I decided to do some research.

How to create a self care box

What is Self Care?

Self care is about recognising that you are important, that you matter and about spending some time for you. Some people might see it as being selfish, but this is simply not the case. Self care ranges from the basics of eating, drinking and being clean, all the way to taking some time away from everything to indulge yourself with the things that really make you feel good about you.

Without recognising that we all should spend some time on ourselves we could be sabotaging our own mental health and well being. As a lot of people who have struggle with mental illness will tell you, the majority of the recovery process is about the sufferer looking after themselves. Whilst professionals are there to support us, they cannot do the healing for us.

Therefore it is vital to have a go to plan in place when things start to get tough, in order to safeguard our wellbeing. Many people who have help with mental health are advised to do this, and I would suggest everyone should have a box in their house which they can turn to when they feel low in mood.

What is a Self Care Box?

Basically, it’s all the things you would want to have to hand if your were feeling anxious, depressed or anything else along those lines. What you put in your box is really entirely up to you, as long as the overall effect for you will be positive.

Many people stash face packs, essential oils, and other products to create a spa in their own home. Others put in items to provoke happy memories or comfort.

In My Box

I decided to have a bit of a mish-mash of things in mine, depending on the mood I am in and what I think will cheer me up. My kit includes:

  • Two Face Packs
  • Sleep spray
  • Mindfulness book
  • Colouring Book
  • A gratitude journal
  • Affirmation Notelets
  • Pen
  • Scented candles
  • Foot Mask
  • Tissues
  • Lip balm
  • Chocolate!

I think it is important to have this box in a place which is easy to access and very visible. This will remind me that it is always there if I need it. I will also add to it when I see things I think would be nice to have in there – a good excuse to buy face packs!

Other Things To Include

If you are looking for some ideas of what you could keep in your box, here’s a little list of suggestions for you.

  • Notebook
  • Stuffed toys
  • Photos of loved ones/favourite places
  • iPod and Earphones (with a calming/comforting playlist ready)
  • DVDs
  • Essential oils
  • Bath Bombs
  • Herbal Tea
  • Small Craft Kits

Don’t forget to treat yourself to a nice box to keep it in. Mine is a stationary shoe box from Sainsbury’s. I have also seen some really nice ones in Homesense/T K Maxx, Hobby craft and WH Smiths.

I would really love to hear what you keep in your box, maybe you already have great little kit? Share your ideas in the comments!
